What’s a Widgeon? Well, a Google/AI web search says, it’s a medium-sized, colorful freshwater ‘dabbling’ duck that feeds primarily on aquatic plants and grasses. Dabbling is the trait of this breed to dip its head forward into the water to graze. The Grumman G-44 began life in the 1940s as the J4F, a light, compact, and versatile transport for the military. This one, seen at AirVenture in 2025, was manufactured in 1942. Dipping the nose of this aircraft into the water to graze… not recommended. The photo was taken with my venerable Nikon Zf and its perfect cohort, the Voigtlander 75 mm f1.5 lens – one of my favorite combinations.
